RaceRetro 2011, Stoneleigh, Coventry. I exhibited a couple of times at this late winter/early spring indoor event. It’s the depths of winter in Sweden from where I would travel over to do the show. I found painting or drawing at indoor well lit shows created added interest in the work I had brought along. Visitors pause a while and look around. At this RaceRetro event I was working on a portrait of Reg Parnell, known affectionately during Britains post war racing era, of which he was hugely influential, as Uncle Reg. At the show a large and cheerful man weighed down with things he was carrying stopped on the carpeted aisle alongside me. He ran an eye along the wall of my paintings, mentioned something about his fathers cars and then observed what I had on the canvas in front of me. Smiling, he put down his things and pulled up a chair. I was now in the presence of Tim Parnell, a former boss of BRM, son of Reg. He had British Motor racing running through his veins. All these years later it is still the thing that sticks in my mind the most from that particular event.

I teamed up with the Brooklands museum for the 2012 RaceRetro show.During this event I painted an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS from 1930 that was displayed on the Brooklands stand. I began and completed the painting over the three days. Most of the time was spent chatting to visitors as they passed by. If I was doing it today I’d try a time lapse film of the process. The sign bottom left says “Win This Painting” and by Sunday lunchtime the painting was duly won.
